Are Fiji's ISPs delivering what they promise?

Complaining about your ISP is one of the most popular topics in ICT circles in Fiji. So I wanted to put the question publicly, does your ISP deliver what they promise?

  • How often do you achieve the maximum throughput that you pay for?
  • How often are one or more of your ISP's services offline?
  • What is your experience calling customer support?
  • Have you used more than one ISP? If so, was one better than the other and how?
  • If you work for one of the ISPs, would you like to address you customers? I will publish your statement.

In response to your questions, I use Connect's broadband service and this is the answer I have for each of your questions:

1)How often do you achieve the maximum throughput that you pay for? never

2)How often are one or more of your ISP's services offline? out of the 24 hrs a day, around 22 are spent offline since the broadband connection cant establish itself properly or when it does, the connection is only able to sustain itself for 5 minutes.

3) What is your experience calling customer support? this is a pointless gesture and will only result in you breaking the phone and various other household objects from the frustration of no one ever answering when you call or when someone does pickup, they transfer your call to someone who is either not at their desk or just unable to provide a satisfactory solution

4) Have you used more than one ISP? If so, was one better than the other and how? I'm planning to switch to Kidanet soon since I've heard some good things about it and the fact that they actually seem to know more about being an ISP despite Connect having been in the game longer - oh well, I suppose the saying "wisdom comes with age" is a load or crock.

5) If you work for one of the ISPs, would you like to address you customers? I will publish your statement. I don't work for an ISP ;)

I also had somewhat similar experience with Connect! The duration it takes for establishing a connection, and the unpredictable/unreasonable connection dropouts were just unbearable. One of the things that I have encountered with their customer service is that when they are having technical problems, no one will respond to your calls! I also ranted about their service in one of my blog postings.
